Building stronger futures through Education funding

A. Jean Battie
Teacher & Mentor

The A. Jean Battie Scholarship was established in August 2012 under the banner of Light of the World International Church with a seed of $10,000 from the Battie family. It is managed as a “donor-advised fund” by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Its purpose is to extend the legacy of Mrs. Battie’s work in the Sarasota County School System that spanned some thirty years but more importantly, to provide financial aid to minority students seeking higher education, whether it’s in colleges, universities, or trade schools.

It is supported monetarily by the church’s congregation and governed by a scholarship committee that’s been established within the church. Scholarships are awarded annually to qualifying minority students based on certain criteria contained in the application. In the 11 years since the fund’s establishment, the committee has awarded more than $100,000 to deserving minority students.
